How to get rid of cat pee smell comes down to one sequence: find every spot, blot it, and soak it with an enzymatic cleaner made to neutralize urine odor. A product that only deodorizes can mask the smell while the urine stays in the carpet, cushion, or fabric.

Key Takeaways
  • 1Getting rid of cat pee smell means finding every spot, blotting it, and soaking it with an enzymatic cleaner made to neutralize pet urine odor.
  • 2Cat pee smell comes from ammonia that microbes make from urea and sulfur compounds they make from felinine, a compound in cat urine.
  • 3Finding hidden stains with a UV black light, then marking each spot in chalk, is the Humane World for Animals method.
  • 4Bleach should never go on cat pee, because bleach mixed with urine produces toxic chloramines.
  • 5A cat that keeps peeing outside the litter box needs a vet check first to rule out medical problems.

How to Get Rid of Cat Pee Smell

Neutralize the urine quickly instead of trying to mask it. The Cornell Feline Health Center says cleaning works best soon after the accident and that odors must be neutralized, not just deodorized, to escape a cat's keen sense of smell.

Using an enzymatic cleaner made to neutralize pet urine odor is the step the ASPCA stresses: clean accidents thoroughly with an enzymatic cleanser designed to neutralize pet odors, sold at most pet stores.

How to stop a house from smelling like cat pee?

Stop a house from smelling like cat pee by neutralizing each soiled spot with an enzymatic cleaner, because the odor comes from urine left in carpet, padding, furniture, or laundry. Keep the litter fresh too: the ASPCA says to scoop at least once a day, and WebVet compares the best cat litter for odor control.

Why Cat Pee Smells So Strong

Cat pee smells so strong because microbes break it down into ammonia from urea and sulfur compounds from felinine, a compound in cat urine. Cats also pass concentrated urine, though the studies that measure it do not link it to odor.

  • Cat urine is concentrated. In a 2014 Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery (JFMS) study of 1,040 apparently healthy cats, 91% had a urine specific gravity above 1.030. Cornell's eClinPath gives a usual feline range of 1.035 to 1.060, against 1.015 to 1.045 for dogs.
  • Microbes turn urea into ammonia. A 2021 JFMS paper says microbial breakdown of cat waste is largely responsible for the odor above soiled litter, with microbial urease turning urea into ammonia.
  • Felinine breaks down into sulfur compounds. The same paper says microbes convert felinine into sulfur-containing thiols, and a 2006 Chemistry & Biology study found felinine levels higher in mature males than in females.

How long does cat pee smell linger?

Cat pee smell lingers until the urine is removed or neutralized, and veterinary references give no set time for it to fade. Because microbes acting on the waste produce the odor, an untreated spot keeps smelling.

A spot can also seem to fade and then return: the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) warns that with products that only mask the odor, the smell may reappear in high humidity.

What smells worse, cat pee or spray?

Spray from an intact male cat is the one veterinary sources single out as especially strong. VCA Animal Hospitals says it has a strong, pungent tom cat odor and that neutering changes the urine's odor, but no veterinary reference ranks spray against ordinary pee. Spray is urine, so clean it the same way, and see cat spraying to stop the marking.

How to Find Hidden Cat Urine

To find hidden cat urine, sniff out suspect areas first, then scan them with a UV black light.

A UV black light reveals a faint glowing stain on a carpet.

Finding hidden stains with a UV black light matters because old accidents can dry invisibly. Humane World for Animals says to use your nose, look closely at suspect areas, and, if you have a black light, use it to identify soiled spots and lightly outline each one with chalk.

These checks make a black light search more reliable:

  • Scan walls and the backs of chairs, not only the floor, because Cornell says spraying cats usually target vertical surfaces.
  • Treat a glow as a lead, not proof. The maker of the PeeDar urine detector says UV light makes any fluorescent substance glow, including some cleaning fluids and foods.
  • Expect damp spots to glow faintly, since the same maker says urine glows best once it is dry.
  • In a multi-cat home, ask your vet about fluorescein, a harmless dye the ASPCA says makes one cat's urine glow blue under ultraviolet light for about 24 hours.

How to Clean Fresh Cat Pee

Clean fresh cat pee by blotting up as much urine as you can, washing the spot without scrubbing, and finishing with an enzymatic cleaner.

Blotting fresh urine before cleaning is the first step in the methods from Humane World for Animals and Ohio State's Indoor Pet Initiative: both have you soak up as much urine as possible before any cleaner touches the carpet.

Ohio State and Humane World give these steps for a fresh accident on carpet:

  1. Lay thick paper towels on the wet spot, cover them with newspaper, and stand on it for about a minute, repeating until the area is barely damp (Humane World).
  2. Saturate the spot with carpet cleaner or a few drops of dish detergent in water, and let it sit an hour or two with no scrubbing (Ohio State).
  3. Cover the spot with towels, weigh them down with books or furniture, and leave them overnight (Ohio State).
  4. In the morning, spray on an enzymatic cleaner and follow its directions (Ohio State). If you still see or smell urine, Humane World says to wash again with an enzymatic cleaner.

Directions differ by product. The maker of Nature's Miracle Cat Urine Destroyer Plus Enzymatic Formula Stain Remover says to use it full strength, soak the spot, wait 15 minutes, and blot, re-treating and air drying for tough odors.

What kills cat urine smell permanently?

Removing the urine completely is what kills cat urine smell for good. The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) says complete odor removal is unlikely unless the urine is completely removed.

In a 1989 Texas A&M study in JAVMA of eleven products on cat urine in carpet, the newer products marketed to eliminate urine odor did best at removing the smell and preventing its return. WebVet's guide to the best enzyme cleaner for cat urine compares current options.

How to Get Old Cat Pee Smell Out of Carpet

To get old cat pee smell out of carpet, clean the set stain, then treat it with an odor neutralizer that reaches as deep as the urine went. Humane World suggests renting a carpet cleaner, then using a high-quality pet odor neutralizer once the area is clean.

Treating carpet padding for old stains is the hard part. Humane World says the job gets harder once urine soaks into the padding, and some carpet and padding may need replacing. Ohio State says that if the smell stays bad and the cat keeps peeing there, replace the padding and clean under the carpet.

One enzyme cleaner's label spells out how deep to go: the directions for Rocco & Roxie Supply Co. Professional Strength Pet Stain & Odor Eliminator say to soak both the carpet and the pad, leave it at least an hour, and weigh a folded towel on top to wick the liquid out.

This cat urine cleanup table by surface matches each spot (carpet, padding, hardwood, mattress, couch, laundry) to the cleaning method that reaches the urine, what to do, and what to avoid on it.

Ohio State applies the same blot-then-enzymatic approach to hardwood and concrete. If your cat keeps marking a floor or rug, cleaning alone usually will not stop it, VCA notes; see cat peeing outside the litter box. For a dog's accidents, see how to get dog pee out of carpet.

Cat Pee on Mattresses, Couches, and Clothes

Cleaning mattresses, couches, and clothes means matching the method to the item: wash anything that fits in the machine, and treat a mattress or fixed cushion with an enzymatic cleaner whose label covers that fabric. The Nature's Miracle label, for one, rules out leather, suede, silk, and wool.

Veterinary references give no mattress-specific method, so follow the label. To clean a couch or mattress, Rocco & Roxie's label says to soak removable covers in the washer with a cup of product, treat fixed cushions directly, and spray or pour it onto a mattress.

Laundry methods for clothes and bedding differ by source:

  • Humane World adds a one-pound box of baking soda to the regular detergent, washes as usual, and air dries if possible.
  • University of Georgia Extension rinses in cool water, soaks in cool water with heavy-duty liquid detergent, then washes in hot water.

To keep a cat from peeing on the bed while you fix the cause, VCA suggests a waterproof mattress cover under the bedding plus a washable, waterproof-backed pet furniture cover on top. If your cat keeps peeing on your bed, see why is my cat peeing on the bed.

What Not to Use on Cat Pee

Do not use ammonia cleaners, bleach, or steam on cat pee. Each one backfires in its own way: ammonia cleaners can draw a cat back to the spot, bleach can react with urine to form toxic gas, and steam heat sets the stain and the odor.

  • Ammonia cleaners bring the cat back. Urine contains ammonia, the ASPCA explains, so cleaning with ammonia could attract a cat to pee in the same spot again.
  • Bleach makes toxic gas with urine and with vinegar. A University of Texas at Arlington bleach safety procedure says bleach mixed with ammonia solutions, including urine, produces toxic chloramines, and the University of Rochester Medical Center warns that bleach and vinegar release chlorine gas.
  • Steam sets the odor. Humane World says steam cleaner heat permanently sets urine stains and odor in carpet and upholstery by bonding the protein into man-made fibers.

Can I use Clorox wipes on my cat's pee?

Not as an odor fix. Clorox Disinfecting Wipes are labeled for hard, nonporous surfaces, and the product page makes no claim about neutralizing cat urine odor. Clorox also says surfaces should dry fully before pets touch them.

Pet Poison Helpline notes that some disinfecting wipes contain quaternary ammonium compounds, which cats are especially sensitive to. Use an enzymatic cleaner instead.

Does Vinegar or Baking Soda Work?

Vinegar and baking soda work only for narrow jobs. Here is what vinegar or baking soda can and cannot do: baking soda can freshen laundry and litter boxes, and vinegar can finish hard floors and pre-wash fabric, but veterinary references do not describe either home remedy breaking down sulfur compounds in cat urine.

Vinegar is where experts split:

  • CRI's carpet method follows the detergent step with one cup of white vinegar in two cups of water, blotted dry, and Ohio State pre-washes soiled laundry in a cup of white vinegar with no detergent.
  • Cornell says to avoid any cleaner containing vinegar or ammonia because they smell like urine and can be irritating, and Humane World warns that strong chemical odors may encourage re-marking.

Baking soda's role is in the wash and the litter box: the ASPCA lists baking soda, unscented soap, or no soap for weekly box washes. A manufacturer brochure on a University of Wisconsin-Madison Extension site says baking soda neutralizes odors rather than covering them with perfume.

Stop the Peeing at the Source

Stopping a cat from peeing around the house starts with a vet visit to rule out medical problems.

Stopping the peeing means ruling out medical causes first and then fixing litter box problems, the order both the ASPCA and the Merck Veterinary Manual give. Merck says any condition affecting urine volume, frequency, control, or access to the box can contribute.

Cornell lists kidney disease, thyroid disease, and diabetes as possible causes because they make cats drink and urinate more. Two urinary problems to ask your vet about are a cat UTI and crystals in cat urine.

Once your vet rules out a medical cause, these litter box fixes come from the ASPCA and Merck:

  • Provide one litter box for each cat in the home, plus one extra.
  • Skip scented cleaners on the box, because the ASPCA says a cat can develop an aversion to the scent.
  • Add boxes in more locations, clean them more often, and treat soiled spots with an enzymatic or antimicrobial cleaner; Merck says these steps can decrease or end marking in some cats.

Cat Pee Smell FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it bad to breathe in the smell of cat pee?

It depends on how much ammonia is in the air. The CDC's Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry says no health effects have been found in people at typical environmental ammonia levels, while high levels irritate the skin, eyes, throat, and lungs.

The agency adds that some people with asthma may be more sensitive. Public health references do not report how much ammonia a soiled room gives off, so ventilate while you clean and skip ammonia-based cleaners.

Why can I still smell cat pee after cleaning?

You can still smell cat pee after cleaning because urine remains somewhere, such as in the carpet padding under the stain or in a dried spot you missed. CRI warns that with products that only mask the odor, the smell may reappear in high humidity.

Re-scan with a UV black light and re-treat each spot with enough enzymatic cleaner to reach the padding.

Will cat pee smell go away on its own?

No. An untreated spot keeps smelling as long as urine stays in the material, so it needs cleaning and an enzymatic cleaner rather than time.

Some cleaner makers say their enzymes break down uric acid crystals, but a JFMS review says allantoin, not uric acid, is the main end product of purine breakdown in most cats. Judge a cleaner by whether the smell is gone once the spot dries.

Does dish soap get rid of cat urine?

Dish soap helps wash fresh cat urine out of carpet, but cleanup guides follow it with an enzymatic cleaner for the odor. CRI's mix is 1/4 teaspoon of non-bleach, non-lanolin liquid dishwashing detergent in one cup of lukewarm water, blotted on with saturated paper towels.

CRI says not to use automatic dishwashing detergent or laundry detergent on the spot.
