How the life expectancy calculator works

The calculator starts from your breed’s published lifespan range, drawn from peer-reviewed veterinary longevity research (including UK VetCompass life-table studies and breed-club health surveys) alongside AKC breed information. It then applies small, conservative adjustments for the lifestyle factors most consistently associated with canine longevity — body condition, exercise, preventive veterinary care, diet quality, and spay/neuter status — to shift the estimate within (and never far beyond) the breed’s documented range.

Alongside the estimate, the results show the health conditions most often reported for your breed, the age window where risk typically rises, early changes worth watching for, and the owner-controlled habits that research links to longer, healthier lives. Every breed’s profile lists its veterinary sources directly in the results.

Frequently asked questions

How long do dogs live on average?

Most dogs live around 10–13 years, but breed and size matter a lot: many small breeds routinely reach 14–16 years, while some giant breeds average 7–10. Select your breed above to see its documented range and the studies behind it.

Can lifestyle really change my dog’s lifespan?

Yes — within limits. Keeping a dog at a lean body condition is the best-documented factor, and regular exercise, preventive veterinary care, and a complete, balanced diet all contribute. The calculator models these as modest shifts around the breed baseline rather than dramatic changes.

How accurate is the estimate?

It’s a range built from breed-level population data, not a prediction for an individual dog. Genetics, health history, and luck all play a role. Use it as a planning tool and a conversation starter with your veterinarian, who knows your dog’s specific situation.

This calculator provides estimates based on breed averages and general lifestyle factors. Individual dogs may vary. Always consult your veterinarian for personalized health guidance.
