A dog car seat cover sits between your dog and the upholstery, so fur and muddy paw prints land on fabric you can clean instead of on the seat. Which cover works depends on two things: the seat your dog rides on and the kind of mess your dog makes.
For most back seats, a waterproof bench cover or a convertible hammock is the right place to start, as long as it leaves the seat belts usable for your dog's restraint. Our top bench pick is the Kurgo Rover Dog Bench Seat Cover, Black, listed at $54.99 on Chewy when we checked in October 2026.
| Cover | Best fit | Format and material | Seat belt access | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kurgo Rover Dog Bench Seat Cover, Black | Full back bench, dog riding alone | Bench cover, polyester and PVC, labeled waterproof | Hook-and-loop openings for belts, pet restraints, and child-seat latches | Standard 55-inch width; wide SUV and truck benches need Kurgo's 63-inch version |
| Dog Gone Smart Dirty Dog 3-in-1 Car Seat Cover & Hammock, Black | Back seat that sometimes carries a passenger | Hammock, bench cover, or half-hammock; quilted Oxford fabric with a microfiber panel | Seat belt openings | The microfiber panel absorbs water rather than blocking it |
| Katziela Quilted Comfort Waterproof Heavy Duty Dog Car Seat Cover, Black | One side of the bench, child seat on the other | Single cover, waterproof 600D Oxford fabric with quilted padding | The uncovered side keeps its belts and latches | Protects one side only |
| KONG Ultimate Cargo Liner & Dog Car Tether | SUV or station wagon cargo area | Cargo liner with a tether, water-resistant | Not needed in the cargo area; the tether clips to a harness | Water-resistant rather than waterproof |
| Arf Pets Waterproof & Non-Slip SUV Cargo Liner, Large | SUV cargo area on a lower budget | Cargo liner with polyurethane layers, side flaps, and a bumper cover | Not needed in the cargo area | No tether; Arf's own page gives no dimensions |
| Frisco Water Resistant Bench Car Seat Cover, Regular, Grey | Back seat of most cars on a tight budget | Bench cover, heavy-duty Oxford polyester | Closeable slits plus seatbelt keepers | Labeled water resistant, not waterproof |
How to protect car seats from a dog: which kind of cover you need
- 1How to protect car seats from a dog starts with the seat: a bench cover for a back seat the dog has to itself, a single-side cover when a person or child seat shares the bench, and a cargo liner for an SUV or wagon load space.
- 2Pick a waterproof fabric with a non-slip backing if your dog comes home wet or tends to get car sick.
- 3Whatever you buy, every seat belt and child-seat latch must stay reachable, because a cover protects the seat but never holds the dog in place.
Seat cover makers describe the job in much the same terms. Covercraft says its dog covers are meant to guard against claws, drool, muddy paws, fur, and bathroom accidents, and Formosa Covers says a back seat cover shields upholstery from dirt, scratches, and spills. Both are manufacturer claims rather than independent tests.

Car sickness adds a messier problem. The Merck Veterinary Manual lists nausea, excessive drooling, and vomiting as signs of motion sickness in dogs. A waterproof cover catches that mess, but it does not treat the cause; our guide to dog car sickness covers what helps.
VCA Animal Hospitals notes that puppies often outgrow motion sickness by about 1 year old, and that several short trips before a long drive is the best way to ease travel anxiety. A cover is a backup for those early trips, not a fix.
What is the best way to protect car seats from dogs?
The best way is a cover matched to the seat, anchored so it cannot slide, with seat belt access left open so your dog can be restrained on top of it. Then match the fabric to what your dog actually does to the seat:
- Shedding and dry dirt: almost any cover works. Covercraft says even its polycotton covers are durable, though less water resistant than its other fabrics.
- Mud, wet coats, and drool: choose a waterproof layer such as PVC, TPU, or layered polyurethane under the top fabric.
- Claws: choose a tough woven fabric such as Oxford polyester or Cordura, and avoid leather-style cover material.
- Car sickness: a waterproof cover with raised edges or side flaps, plus a conversation with your vet about the motion sickness itself.
Dogs that track mud through the house as well as the car may also do better with a dog gate that keeps them in a wipe-down area until their paws dry.
| Seat or space | Cover type | Fit check | Material to look for | Seat belt access |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Back bench, dog rides alone | Bench seat cover or convertible hammock | Measure the bench left to right; Kurgo's standard Rover is 55 inches wide | Waterproof polyester with PVC, or quilted Oxford fabric | Hook-and-loop or closeable openings at every buckle |
| Back bench shared with a passenger or child seat | Single-side cover, or a hammock with one half zipped up | Covers one side of the bench only | Waterproof 600D Oxford fabric with a non-slip base | The uncovered side keeps its belts and latches |
| Front bucket seat | Bucket seat cover | AAA advises keeping dogs in the back, away from front-seat airbags | Washable fabric with non-slip backing | Must leave the front passenger belt clear |
| SUV or wagon cargo area | Cargo liner | Straps around the rear headrests; side flaps and a bumper cover protect walls and bumper | Layered polyurethane (waterproof) or a water-resistant polyester blend | Not needed; secure the dog with a harness tether, a carrier, or a crate |
| Truck crew cab or wide SUV bench | Extended-width bench cover | About 62 to 63 inches wide (Kurgo extended width, Formosa XX-Large) | Waterproof fabric with non-slip backing | Openings must line up with every rear belt |
| Leather seats | Any type with non-slip backing | Must stay put on a smooth surface | Avoid leather-style cover material if claws are long | Same as the seat type above |
Our picks: the best dog car seat covers
We chose these six from Chewy's listings, with specifications from each maker or a named retailer, and checked fit and safety points against AAA, Consumer Reports, and veterinary sources. We did not install or test the covers; every product detail comes from the listing or the maker.
The six span the main cover types for car travel: two bench covers, one convertible hammock, one single-side cover, and two cargo liners.
| Pick | Dimensions | Fabric | Water rating as labeled | Care |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kurgo Rover Dog Bench Seat Cover | 36 x 55 x 0.5 in (PetSmart listing, gray version) | Polyester and PVC (PetSmart listing, gray version) | Waterproof | Chewy listing gives no wash method |
| Dog Gone Smart Dirty Dog 3-in-1 | Not stated in the listing text | Quilted Oxford fabric with a microfiber panel | Waterproof Oxford fabric; absorbent microfiber | Listing says easy to clean |
| Katziela Quilted Comfort single cover | Not stated in the listing text | 600D Oxford fabric, quilted padding, mesh side panels | Waterproof | Wipe, vacuum, or machine wash |
| KONG Ultimate Cargo Liner | Not stated in the listing text; weighs 4.5 lb (KONG) | 85% polyester, 10% steel, 5% nylon (KONG) | Water-resistant | Machine wash the liner, not the tether |

| Frisco Bench Car Seat Cover, Regular | Not stated in the listing text | Heavy-duty Oxford polyester | Water resistant | Machine washable |
Kurgo Rover Dog Bench Seat Cover: best waterproof bench cover

A waterproof bench cover with hook-and-loop openings for seat belts, pet restraints, and child-seat latches.

The Kurgo Rover is a bench seat cover for the whole back seat, listed at $54.99 on Chewy when we checked in October 2026. Chewy's listing describes a waterproof design with piped edges, front and rear attachments to stop slipping, and hook-and-loop openings for seat belts, pet restraints, and child car seat latches.
PetSmart's listing for the gray version gives the size as 36 by 55 inches and the materials as polyester and PVC. Kurgo says it built the cover with top, middle, rear, and under-seat attachments, double-stitched seams to resist tearing, and raised piping that keeps dirt and water from rolling onto the floor.
It suits a dog that rides alone on a standard back bench and often comes home muddy. The tradeoff is width: 55 inches is the standard size, and Kurgo sells a 63-inch extended-width version for most SUVs and some trucks.
Dog Gone Smart Dirty Dog 3-in-1 Car Seat Cover & Hammock: best convertible cover

Converts between hammock, bench cover, and half-hammock, with seat belt openings, anchors, and adjustable straps.
Webvet may earn a commission when you click through to Chewy, at no extra cost to you.
This cover converts three ways: a full hammock, a bench seat cover, or a half-hammock when a passenger rides beside the dog. Chewy listed it at $76.49 in October 2026. The listing describes waterproof quilted Oxford fabric, a soft microfiber bottom panel that absorbs moisture, seat belt openings, and anchors with adjustable straps.
The Australian distributor's description adds four snap buckles and a non-slip rubber bottom, and it puts the microfiber on the seating area, with the waterproof Oxford fabric on the hammock. In practice, the surface your dog lies on soaks up water rather than shedding it.
It suits owners who switch between driving the dog alone and carrying a passenger. A hammock-style cover blocks the gap so a dog cannot slip into the footwell, according to Formosa Covers. For hammock-only options, see our best dog car hammocks.
Katziela Quilted Comfort Waterproof Heavy Duty Dog Car Seat Cover: best single-side cover that leaves room for a child seat

A quilted single cover in waterproof 600D Oxford fabric that leaves the other side of the bench free for a car seat.
Webvet may earn a commission when you click through to Chewy, at no extra cost to you.
Katziela's single cover protects one side of the back seat and, by the Chewy listing's description, leaves room for a car seat so a dog and a toddler can ride together. It was listed at $99.99 on Chewy when we checked in October 2026.
The listing describes waterproof 600D Oxford fabric with quilted padding, a non-slip base, breathable mesh side panels, and adjustable straps and anchors. It can be wiped, vacuumed, or machine washed. For the single cover on its own site, Katziela says to attach it with the seat anchor, then secure it with the seat belt and buckle connector.
It suits families who share the back seat with a dog. The tradeoff is coverage: the other half of the bench stays bare, so a passenger on that side sits on the seat itself.
KONG Ultimate Cargo Liner & Dog Car Tether: best cargo liner with a tether included

A padded, water-resistant cargo liner for SUVs and wagons that comes with a tether for your dog's harness.
Webvet may earn a commission when you click through to Chewy, at no extra cost to you.
KONG's liner is made for the load space of a station wagon or SUV and comes with a tether. Chewy listed it at $89.99 in October 2026, the same price KONG showed on its own site. The listing describes water-resistant material with a soft, padded surface.
Chewy's listing says the tether attaches to your dog's harness to keep the dog from escaping when you open the tailgate. KONG warns never to attach an in-car tether to a collar, only a harness. Its description calls the fabric a cotton blend, while its materials line reads 85% polyester, 10% steel, and 5% nylon.
KONG lists the weight as 4.5 pounds, and the liner is machine washable. It suits a dog that rides in the back of an SUV, when you want the liner and a tailgate tether in one purchase.
Arf Pets Waterproof & Non-Slip SUV Cargo Liner: best value SUV cargo liner

A padded SUV cargo liner with polyurethane layers, side flaps, a bumper cover, and an anti-slip bottom.
Webvet may earn a commission when you click through to Chewy, at no extra cost to you.
Arf Pets' liner is the lower-priced of the two cargo liners here, listed at $52.11 on Chewy when we checked in October 2026 in the Large size. Chewy's listing describes multiple layers of polyurethane as the liquid barrier, and Arf's own site says there are three.
The listing also describes a padded surface, an anti-slip bottom, generous side flaps, and two reinforced straps that go around the headrests. Arf adds an attached bumper cover. The listing says the colorfast material will not stain upholstery or leather, and the liner can be vacuumed, wiped, or washed.
Arf's own page gives no dimensions, so compare your cargo area with the Large size on Chewy before ordering. There is no tether, so plan a separate restraint for the cargo area.
Frisco Water Resistant Bench Car Seat Cover: best budget bench cover

A low-cost Oxford polyester bench cover with closeable seat belt slits, seatbelt keepers, and machine washing.
Webvet may earn a commission when you click through to Chewy, at no extra cost to you.
Frisco is Chewy's own brand, and this is the lowest-priced cover among our picks, listed at $20.99 on Chewy when we checked in October 2026 in the Regular size. The listing describes heavy-duty Oxford polyester that protects seats from water, spills, stains, and color bleeding, sized for the back seats of most cars.
It has closeable slits for seat belt access and seatbelt keepers that hold the belts out of the way, and it is machine washable. The listing's install is three steps: lay it on the seat, loop the straps around the headrests, then push the anchors into the seat gaps.
The tradeoff is the label. The product name says water resistant, not waterproof, which matters more for a dog that climbs in dripping than for one that mostly sheds.
Bench, single-side, bucket, or cargo liner: matching the cover to the seat
Makers sort covers by how much of the car they protect. Formosa Covers groups its range into full back, full single, bench, hammock-style, and cargo liner coverage, and Covers And All sells front seat, rear seat, trunk, and hammock-style rear seat covers.

Here is how each type fits a seat:
- Bench seat cover (back seat): covers the whole rear bench. Kurgo's advice is to measure the bench from left to right before buying. For a basic rear seat cover on a budget, the Frisco Water Resistant Bench Car Seat Cover, Regular, Grey is sized for the back seats of most cars, per its listing.
- Single-side or half cover: protects one side of the back seat and leaves the other for a passenger or a child seat. Katziela titles its quilted bench-style cover as a single size that leaves space for passengers, and the Dirty Dog 3-in-1 can zip half its hammock up.
- Split rear cover: 4Knines says its split rear seat cover gives access to all three seat belts and lets 60/40 and 50/50 split seats fold without removing the cover.
- Front bucket seat cover: 4Knines sells a front (bucket) seat cover separately, listed at $44.99 on its own site when we checked in October 2026. AAA advises keeping dogs out of the front seat, so this type mainly protects a front seat a dog climbs over.
- Cargo liner: protects the load space of an SUV or station wagon rather than a seat. The KONG Ultimate Cargo Liner & Dog Car Tether is built for that space and adds a tether.
If you want a hard-bottom cover with a rigid base, none of our six picks is one; their listings describe fabric, quilted, or padded covers instead, held in place by seat anchors, headrest straps, attachments, or non-slip backing.
Materials: waterproof, quilted, and claw-resistant fabrics
We found no independent rating for how waterproof or claw-resistant a dog seat cover fabric is; the ratings we found are the makers' own. Covers And All, for example, calls its fabric 100% waterproof and non-slip. Read the label wording closely, because waterproof and water resistant are different claims.

What the common cover fabrics do, by the makers' descriptions:
- Oxford polyester: a woven fabric used on three of our six picks. Frisco calls its version heavy-duty, Katziela uses 600D Oxford with quilted padding, and the Dirty Dog 3-in-1 uses quilted Oxford fabric.
- PVC and TPU layers: Kurgo lists polyester and PVC for the Rover. Katziela's own site describes a TPU waterproof barrier on its quilted cover that takes seconds to wipe or vacuum.
- Polyurethane layers: Arf Pets says the multiple layers of polyurethane in its cargo liner create a barrier against liquid.
- Microfiber: soft and absorbent, so it soaks up moisture rather than blocking it, as on the Dirty Dog seating panel.
- Polycotton: Covercraft says these covers are breathable, durable, and comfortable, but less water resistant than its other options.
- Leather-style: Covercraft says they give a luxury look with easy-to-clean surfaces, but claws could damage the material.
For dog hair, padded and quilted covers such as Katziela's can be vacuumed or wiped, and Frisco's and KONG's covers are machine washable. For warm days, Katziela's listing describes breathable mesh side panels; none of the listings makes a cooling claim.
What is the best material for car seat covers for dogs?
For most dogs, a woven polyester such as Oxford fabric over a waterproof layer (PVC, TPU, or polyurethane), with a non-slip backing, handles the usual mess of wet coats, mud, drool, and car-sickness accidents. If your dog only sheds, a water-resistant or polycotton cover is enough, though Covercraft notes polycotton is less water resistant.
What is the toughest fabric for dogs?
Among the makers' own claims, Covercraft calls its Marathon Cordura covers its toughest option and ideal for larger dogs, and Katziela sells its 600D Oxford cover as heavy duty. These are maker claims, not independent claw tests. Covercraft warns claws could damage leather-style material, a poor match for a dog with long nails.
Trucks, SUVs, captain chairs, and leather seats: fit by vehicle
Width is the first fit check. Kurgo's advice is to measure the bench seat from left to right; its standard Rover is 55 inches wide, and PetSmart's listing for the extended-width version gives 63 inches, designed to fit most SUVs and some trucks.

Fit notes by vehicle:
- Pickup trucks and crew cabs: look for wider covers. Formosa Covers sells a 62-inch XX-Large cover labeled for a truck, van, or large SUV, and 4Knines makes a crew cab truck seat cover with a hammock and mesh window for fold-up seats. Katziela markets its quilted bench protector for cars, SUVs, and trucks.
- SUVs: an extended-width bench cover suits the back seat, and a cargo liner suits the load space. The Arf Pets Waterproof & Non-Slip SUV Cargo Liner, Large adds a bumper cover for the moment your dog jumps in over the tailgate.
- Captain chairs: two separate second-row seats do not match a one-piece bench cover. Covercraft's custom SeatSaver covers come with headrest and armrest covers, and Covercraft includes console covers only for bench seats.
- Small cars and two-door coupes: measure the rear bench first. If standard sizes do not fit, Covers And All makes custom-sized covers from measurements you send.
- Rear seats with no headrests: the Frisco cover and the Arf liner both fasten with straps around the headrests, so check your seats before choosing a strap-mounted cover.
- Leather seats: pick a cover with non-slip backing. Arf Pets says its liner defends upholstery and leather surfaces from nail scratches and spills, a manufacturer claim.
If your dog struggles to climb into a tall SUV cargo area or a truck cab, our guides to dog ramps and dog lift harnesses cover getting in and out.
Installing a seat cover so it stays put and leaves the seat belts usable
A cover that slides bunches under the dog and covers the buckles. The Dirty Dog distributor describes its non-slip rubber bottom as the thing that stops a cover from shifting or bunching, and most of our picks use some mix of these fixings:
- Seat anchors: pushed into the gap between the seat back and the cushion (Frisco, Katziela, Dirty Dog).
- Headrest straps: looped around the headrests and tightened (Frisco, Arf Pets).
- Non-slip backing: Formosa Covers says it keeps the cover in place on every turn.
- Extra attachments: four snap buckles on the Dirty Dog, and top, middle, rear, and under-seat attachments on the Kurgo Rover.

Frisco's listing gives three install steps for its bench cover, and Katziela adds a seat belt step for its single cover:
- Lay the cover flat on the seat.
- Loop the straps around the headrests and adjust them for a snug fit.
- Push the seat anchors into the gap between the seat back and the cushion.
- On a single-side cover, secure it with the seat belt and buckle connector, as Katziela directs.
- Open each seat belt opening and check that every buckle and child-seat latch can be reached and used.
Seat belt access matters for your dog as much as for passengers, because a restraint that clips into a buckle or latch needs the opening in the cover to line up with it. Kurgo's openings are made for seat belts, pet restraints, and child car seat latches; our dog seat belts guide covers the restraint itself.
Side flaps and mesh suit dogs that lean on doors or want to see the driver. Arf's liner has generous side flaps, Katziela's cover has breathable mesh side panels, and 4Knines puts a mesh window in its crew cab cover. If a cover has a tether, take it off before washing; KONG says not to wash its tether.
AAA suggests letting your dog get used to a restraint at home and on short rides first, so the new setup does not become a distraction. If your dog needs attention mid-trip, pull over before adjusting anything: AAA Minneapolis says two seconds spent reaching back for your dog doubles your crash risk.
Seat covers and safety: why a cover does not replace a restraint
A seat cover protects the seat. It does nothing to hold your dog in place in a sudden stop. Consumer Reports says an unrestrained pet of any size can hurtle through the cabin as a dangerous projectile, and AAA says an unrestrained dog can be thrown across the vehicle, seriously injured, or even ejected.
Published crash-force figures differ, so treat them as estimates:
- Consumer Reports, citing BarkBuckleUp, says a 60-pound dog in a car traveling 35 mph can become a 2,700-pound projectile.
- AAA Minneapolis wrote in 2018 that an unrestrained 9-pound dog in a 50 mph crash exerts roughly 450 pounds of pressure, and a 90-pound dog at 30 mph roughly 2,700 pounds.
Plenty of owners still skip the restraint. In an August 2026 survey of 200 Illinois dog owners, AAA found that 31% still let their dogs ride unrestrained. Laws also differ from state to state, according to AAA Northeast; Maine, for example, requires some kind of dog restraint in pickup trucks, convertibles, and other open vehicles.
Are dog car seat covers safe?
Yes, as seat protection, when the cover is anchored so it cannot slide and its openings leave every seat belt and child-seat latch usable. A cover is not a safety device, though. Kurgo says its extended-width cover will not interfere with many side airbags, which is a reason to check where your car's airbags deploy before fitting any cover.
Restraints are a different purchase with their own limits. Consumer Reports says there are no standards or industry tests for pet restraints, and that products labeled crash-tested usually rest on the maker's own claims rather than a standard.
AAA advises a properly sized restraint, carrier, or crate designed for vehicle use, not a regular walking harness or leash, and independently crash-tested products when possible. Our guides to dog car seats, dog crates, and heavy-duty dog crates cover those options.
Dog car seat cover questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Are waterproof dog seat covers really waterproof?
It depends on the fabric, and the waterproof claims are the makers' own. Labels vary even within one brand: Kurgo's standard Rover is listed as waterproof, while its extended-width version is described as water and stain resistant. A water resistant label promises less than a waterproof one, so look for a named barrier layer such as PVC, TPU, or polyurethane.
Will a dog seat cover protect leather seats?
A cover keeps claws, hair, and spills off the leather as long as it stays in place, so choose one with a non-slip backing that will not shift on a smooth seat. Arf Pets says its liner defends leather surfaces and that its colorfast material will not stain them. Skip leather-style cover material if your dog's claws are long.
Do dog seat covers fit pickup trucks?
Many do, if you buy for the truck's rear bench width rather than a car's. Measure the bench left to right first. Kurgo's extended-width bench cover is 63 inches and is designed for most SUVs and some trucks, and Formosa's 62-inch XX-Large cover is labeled for a truck, van, or large SUV.
How do you wash a dog car seat cover?
Follow the care label, because methods differ. You can machine wash the KONG cargo liner (but not its tether), the Frisco bench cover, and the Katziela single cover; Katziela suggests vacuuming and wiping for routine cleaning and saving the machine wash for a deeper clean. Kurgo's extended-width cover is hand wash or spot clean only, then air dry.
Can passengers still buckle up with a dog seat cover on?
Yes, if the cover has seat belt openings that line up with each buckle. The Dirty Dog 3-in-1 lists hook-and-loop openings for the seat belts, and Frisco uses closeable slits with seatbelt keepers that hold the belts out of the way. With a single-side cover such as Katziela's, the passenger side is simply left uncovered.
