Physical Characteristics
- Fairly large build
- Coat: Short, fine hair
- Coloring of mouse-gray to silver-gray
- Gray nose
- Eyes are amber, gray or blue-gray
- Fairly long, hanging ears
- Height: 23-27 inches
- Weight: 55-85 pounds
- Average lifespan: 10-12 years
Temperament
- Happy, affectionate, smart, independent, willful, brave, loyal
- Interaction with people: Not recommended for small children or seniors
- Interaction with animals: Not recommended for small pets
- Level of attention needed: Needs lots of affection and love
- Training: Needs firm, experienced training
- Protection: Good watchdog, but not aggressive
Medical Conditions
- Bloat
- Congenital cardiac diseases (including tricuspid valve dysplasia)
- Hip and elbow dysplasia
- Hypertrophic osteodystrophy (bone disease found in puppies)
- Hypothryroidism
- Ophthalmic disorders (including entropion, distichiasis, corneal dermoid cysts and progressive retinal atrophy)
- Persistent right aortic arch
- von Willebrand's Disease (blood disorder)
While the listed ailments may be common in this breed, not all members of the breed suffer from these conditions. Responsible breeders screen for orthopedic and genetic diseases.

- Originated in Germany
- Dates back to the early 1800s
- Ancestor believed to be the Bloodhound
- Bred for hunting big game
- Breed brought to the U.S. by Howard Knight, who also founded the breed's club
