- Sturdy build
- Heavy coat is thick
- Coloring is solid black
- Oval, dark brown eyes
- Small black nose
- Triangular, erect ears
- Docked tail
- Height: 10-13 inches
- Weight: 10-18 pounds
- Average lifespan: 15 or more years

- Watchful, curious, mischievous, energetic, courageous, smart, spirited, alert, stubborn
- Interaction with people: Good with children; wary of strangers
- Interaction with animals: Good with other pets and dogs
- Training: Easily trained
- Protection: Good watchdog; protective of family, defends territory
- Bark: Can be highly vocal

- Originally called spits or spitske, it took the name of Schipperke after its club formed in 1888
- The name Schipperke means "little captain" in Flemish
- Breed became especially popular when the Queen of Belgium bought one in 1885
Breed History
- Originated in Belgium
- Bred from the Leauvenaar breed
- Traced back to 1690
- Guarded canal barges in Belgium
- Helped shoemakers and other workers along the canals
- Docking of the tail occurred around 1609
- Walter Comstock is believed to have brought the first dog to the U.S. in 1888
