Physical Characteristics
- Medium build
- Slim, muscular and elegant
- Long drop ears
- Extensive, fine hair on the ears and tail
- Dark to hazel eyes
- Thick hair between toes
- Coat: Feathered, smooth short hair
- Colors include: White, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle and tan, tricolor (white, black and tan) and black and tan
- Height: 23-28 inches
- Weight: 30-65 pounds
- Average lifespan: 10-12 years
Temperament
- Intelligent, alert, sensitive, gentle, affectionate, calm, even-tempered
- Interaction with people: Good with mature children, friendly to strangers
- Interaction with animals: May be aggressive with non-canine pets
- Level of attention needed: Needs significant love and companionship
- Training: Train in a loving manner; can be easily distracted
Medical Conditions
- Acquired cardiac disease (including cardiomyopathy)
- Cancers (including hemangiosarcoma)
- Hypothyroidism
- Susceptible to anesthesia

Breed History
- Originated in the Middle East
- Considered a royal dog of Egypt
- May be the oldest dog breed
- Depictions of dogs similar to the Saluki found on Egyptian tombs date back to 7000 B.C.
- Given as gifts rather than being sold
- Brought to England in 1840
