Physical Characteristics
- Small, strong, box-shaped build
- Strong, rectangular muzzle with pronounced beard and black nose
- Hard, bristly topcoat comes in black/silver, salt/pepper and solid black; soft undercoat
- Tail is usually docked
- Height: 12-14 inches
- Weight: 13-15 pounds
- Average lifespan: 14 years
Temperament
- Loving, intelligent, affectionate, energetic, obedient, playful
- Interaction with people: Good with children; enjoys feeling part of the human family
- Interaction with animals: Good with other dogs
- Training: Easily trained; needs to be socialized with other dogs as a puppy
- Bark: May be vocal
- Protection: Good watch dog
Medical Conditions
- Myotonia Congenita (muscular disorder)
- Neuronal Ceroid-Lipofuscinosis (neurological disorder)
- Ophthalmic disorders (including progressive retinal atrophy, retinal dysplasia and cataracts)
- Urolithiasis (bladder stones)
While the listed ailments may be common in this breed, not all members of the breed suffer from these conditions. Responsible breeders screen for orthopedic and genetic diseases.

- OK for apartments; ideal city dogs
- Needs long daily walks
- Enjoys the home environment
Grooming
- Light shedder; considered hypoallergenic
- Brush daily to prevent matting
- May require professional grooming throughout the year

- While a cross between the Standard Schnauzer, Affenpinscher and possibly the Poodle
