Physical Characteristics
- Solid, square build
- Long head and neck
- V-shaped ears hang to the front
- Tail carried high
- Coat: Harsher outer coat; undercoat protects from brambles and bad weather
- Comes in a variety of solid colors of: wheaten, red, blue, or black; also come with saddle markings
- Dark eyes
- Height: 13.5-15.5 inches
- Weight: 15-17 pounds
- Average lifespan: 10-12 years
Temperament
- Lively, cheerful, loving, alert, feisty, willful, determined
- Interaction with people: Excellent family dog; plays well with children
- Interaction with animals: Gets along with other dogs but needs socializing with noncanine pets at an early age
- Training: Needs firm training but learns quickly; can be difficult to housebreak
- Bark: Can be very vocal
- Protection: Protective of toys and food

- Generally healthy

Other Facts
- Known to follow prey underground for extensive distances and amounts of time
- Also known as the Patterdale, Cumberland and Westmoreland terrier
- A Lakeland terrier named Stingray of Derryabah was the first dog to win top honors at both the Crufts (Kennel Club of the U.K.) and Westminster (American Kennel Club) dog shows in 1967
Breed History
- Native to the rocky grounds of Great Britain's Lake Districts, particularly the Cumberland region, where it was bred as a working terrier
- Originally known as the Patterdale terrier
- Used alongside hounds to hunt fox, which raided local sheep herds
