Physical Characteristics
- Solid white
- Double coat formed by guard hair and fine undercoat
- Coarse coat texture
- V-shaped, dropped ears
- Ears fold close to head
- Dark brown, almond-shaped eyes
- Height: 26-30 inches
- Weight: 100-115 pounds
- Average lifespan: 10-12 years
Temperament
- Smart, determined, courageous, curious, devoted, gentle, sensitive, independent
- Interaction with people: Good with children; can be standoffish with owner; wary of strangers
- Interaction with animals: Male-to-male aggression is common. Will stand up to larger animals without hesitation
- Level of attention needed: Doesn't like to be left alone for long periods of time
- Training: Easy to housebreak; obedience training can be difficult. Needs experienced trainer; consult an expert. Needs to be taught, not trained - it learns by feeling, not force
- Protection: Good guard dog; strong protective instincts
Medical Conditions
- Cruciate ligament rupture
- Hip dysplasia
- Hypertrophic osteodystrophy (bone disease found in puppies)
- Hypothyroidism
- Ophthalmic disorders (including progressive retinal atrophy)
- Osteochondritis Dissecans (defect in cartilage)
- Panosteitis (bone disease that can cause lameness in growing puppies)
While the listed ailments may be common in this breed, not all members of the breed suffer from these conditions. Responsible breeders screen for orthopedic and genetic diseases.
At Home
- Not recommended for apartments; best in rural areas
- Needs a large yard
- Prefers cold climates
Grooming
- Rarely sheds in cold climates; sheds year-round in warm climates
- Needs weekly brushing
- Check behind ears for matting
Other Facts
- Name is derived from the Turkish word, 'Kawasz," which means "armed guard of the nobility"
- Plural of Kuvasz is Kuvaszok
- Nearly went extinct after World War II, with less than 30 remaining
- In the 15th century, King Matthias honored Count Dracula by giving him a Kuvasz from the royal kennel
Breed History
- Native to Tibet
- Was revered under the rule of Hungarian King Matthias I (1458 - 1490)
- Constant companions of rulers; presented as gifts to noblemen and dignitaries
- Trained to hunt wild boar and bear
- Used largely as guardians of village flocks
