Physical Characteristics
- Covered with unusual heavy coat of white cords
- Can take up to two years for coat to cord completely and five years to reach the desired length
- Large breed with heavy bones
- Head and muzzle are massive
- Medium-sized, almond-shaped, dark brown eyes
- Elongated, triangular ears with slightly rounded tip
- Height: 25.5-27.5 inches
- Weight: 80-100 pounds
- Average lifespan: 10-12 years
Temperament
- Sober, alert, dominant, willful, smart, easily bored, territorial
- Interaction with people: Not recommended for children; wary of strangers
- Interaction with animals: Can be aggressive with other dogs
- Training: Needs early socialization and firm obedience training
- Protection: Good watchdog; extremely protective
Medical Conditions
- Bloat
- Heavy coat can hide external parasites
- Hip dysplasia
- Ophthalmic disorders (including entropion and juvenile cataracts)
- Otitis Externa (ear infections)
- Susceptible to anesthesia
While the listed ailments may be common in this breed, not all members of the breed suffer from these conditions. Responsible breeders screen for orthopedic and genetic diseases.
At Home
- Best in rural areas
- Needs long daily walks
- Adaptable to any climate
Grooming
- Minimal shedder
- Never brush or comb hair; divide cords and trim
- Coat needs regular bathing and takes a long time to dry

- Works primarily as a guardian of flocks and herds rather than a herder

- Most respected of all Hungarian sheepdogs
Breed History
- Descendents of Tibetan dogs, the Komondor was brought to Hungary from Asia by the nomadic Magyars around 900 A.D.
- Earliest records date back to the 16th century
- Gained recognition in the 1920s, when it first became a show dog
