Physical Characteristics
- Muscular, sturdy build
- Coat: Weather-resistant, wiry coat
- Coat is solid liver (brown) or liver with white kspots and/or ticking
- The long beard, forehead hair and eyebrows protect the face from brambles and injury
- Eyes are dark brown and almond-shaped
- Height: 22-26 inches
- Weight: 45-75 pounds
- Average lifespan: 12-14 years
Temperament
- Affectionate, smart, responsive, eager to please, highly sociable
- Interaction with people: Good with mature children; wary of strangers
- Interaction with animals: Good with other household pets
- Training: Needs early socialization
- Protection: Good watchdog
Medical Conditions
- Hip and elbow dysplasia
- Hypothyroidism
- von Willebrand's Disease (blood disorder)
While the listed ailments may be common in this breed, not all members of the breed suffer from these conditions. Responsible breeders screen for orthopedic and genetic diseases.
At Home
- Not recommended for apartments
- Needs at least an hour of exercise a day
- Should be able to hunt or run and explore
- Prefers to live inside with its family with access to the outdoors
- Loves to swim and retrieve
Grooming
- Average shedder
- Brush about twice a week with a firm-bristled brush
- Hairs should be hand-plucked occasionally
- Check ears and feet after the dog has been outside
