  • Almost became extinct during World War I due to lack of food
Breed History
  • Originated in the 18th century in England
  • Recognized as one of the oldest hunting retrievers
  • Believed to be descended from the crossing of the Old English water dog, Irish water spaniel, poodle, setter and the small Newfoundland
  • A favorite of English gamekeepers because of its field abilities and perseverance in all weather and water conditions
  • First brought to America in 1924
