Bedlington Terrier

The Bedlington Terrier is an alert and energetic breed that is compatible for people with allergies. Although this native of England has a coat that is hypoallergenic, it does require regular grooming.

Physical Characteristics
  • Medium build
  • Narrow head with domed skull and topknot at the crown
  • Triangular-shaped ears
  • Coat: Short, curly hair; comes in blue, liver and sandy; may have tan markings
  • Small, almond-shaped eyes vary in color according to shade of coat
  • Height: 15-17 inches
  • Weight: 18-23 pounds
  • Average lifespan: 14-15 years
Temperament
  • Playful, loyal, mild, loving, energetic, friendly
  • Interaction with people: Excellent with children; responsive to human emotion
  • Interaction with animals: May fight other dogs when challenged; most compatible with dogs of the opposite sex
  • Training: Needs early socialization
  • Bark: Moderately vocal

Breed History
  • Originated in the 1800s in England
  • Originally known as the Rothbury terrier, this breed likely descended from the Otterhound, Dandie Dinmont terrier, and whippet
  • Initially used as a vermin, badger and rat hunter
  • The National Bedlington Terrier Club of England was established in 1877
