Beauceron

The Beauceron is a large herding breed that is an excellent guard dog and companion. This native of France is a fearless and tireless working dog that requires regular exercise and prefers to have a job.

Physical Characteristics
  • Large, solid build
  • Dark eyes (walleye acceptable in dogs of harelquin color) and black nose
  • Coat: Short, course hair; comes in black and tan, black and tan with harlequin
  • Long tail carried low and slightly curved at the end
  • Double dewclaws on back feet
  • Height: 24-27.5 inches
  • Weight: Up to 110 pounds
  • Average lifespan: 10-12 years
Temperament
  • Smart, faithful, brave, attentive, patient, eager to please, territorial and fearless
  • Interaction with people: Good with mature children. Wary of strangers
  • Interaction with animals: Wary of other dogs and non-canine pets; needs early socialization
  • Level of attention needed: Needs significant attention and exercise
  • Training: Easily trained for a task
  • Protection: Great guard dog

  • Acquired cardiac disease (including dilated cardiomyopathy)
  • Allergies
  • Bloat
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Ophthalmic disorders
  • Osteochondritis Dissecans (defect in cartilage)

Other Facts
  • Nicknamed the Bas Rouge, meaning "red stocking" in French
  • Until recently, almost unheard of outside of France
  • Has recently become sought-after throughout Europe and the U.S.
  • French army and police still use this for work
Breed History
  • Originated in the Middle Ages in France
  • First documented in a 1578 manuscript
  • Shown in first Canine Exposition in Paris in 1863
  • First shepherd dog club was founded, including the Beauceron, in 1897
  • Used by militaries as messengers and mine detectors; carried food and ammunition to troops
  • Primarily used as herders and guard dogs of sheep
