Physical Characteristics
- Large build
- Coat: Short, dense hair with thick undercoat
- Almond-shaped, brown eyes
- Solid black or brown nose
- Black mask
- Height: 28-32 inches
- Weight: 85-145 pounds
- Average lifespan: 12-15 years
Temperament
- Alert, smart, calm, loyal, protective, territorial, stubborn
- Interaction with people: Good with children, but should be supervised due to its strength
- Interaction with animals: Can be dominant toward other dogs; needs early socializing to prevent this
- Protection: Good guard dog; protective of family and territory
Medical Conditions
- Bloat
- Hip and elbow dysplasia
- Ophthalmic disorders (including entropion)
- Osteosarcoma (bone cancer)
While the listed ailments may be common in this breed, not all members of the breed suffer from these conditions. Responsible breeders screen for orthopedic and genetic diseases.
At Home
- Not recommended for apartments
- Needs large yard
- Needs long daily walks
Grooming
- Sheds heavily twice a year
- Needs thorough brushing during shedding season
- Requires little to no grooming except when shedding
