Physical Characteristics
- Tall and slender build
- Long, elegant face
- Coat: Thick, silky hair
- Dark, triangular eyes
- Black nose
- Tail is feathered and curled at the tip
- Height: 25-27 inches
- Weight: 50-60 pounds
- Average lifespan: 12-14 years
Temperament
- Dignified, shy, reserved, independent, sweet, loyal, affectionate, sensitive
- Interaction with people: Wary of strangers; good with mature children
- Training: Can be difficult to train and housebreak
Medical Conditions
- Hip and elbow dysplasia
- Ophthalmic disorders (including cataracts)
- Thyroid dysfunction
While the listed ailments may be common in this breed, not all members of the breed suffer from these conditions. Responsible breeders screen for orthopedic and genetic diseases.
At Home
- Not recommended for apartments
- Enjoys playing in a yard; needs plenty of exercise
- Participates in outdoor activities
Grooming
- Average shedder
- Groom coat often
- Avoid matting by brushing after a bath
- Bathe weekly
Other Facts
- May have been used for hunting with tribal chiefs
- Coat is typical of those often found on animals native to high altitudes
- First appeared in the U.S. in 1926

- Discovered in Afghanistan
- Exists in the Middle East in three varieties: short-haired, fringe-haired and long/thick-haired
- Brought to England in the 19th century
