Selkirk Rex

Try out our new Cat Breed Chooser Tool to help you select a breed.
Physical Characteristics
  • The coat comes in two lengths: short and long
  • Round head with no flat planes
  • Loose, plush curl
  • The curling should be strongest on the flanks, tummy and around the neck
  • The back of a Selkirk has the least amount of curl
Temperament
  • Patient, loving, tolerant
Medical Conditions
  • Healthy breed
  • Needs boosters by 12 weeks old
  • Annual vet visit for checkups is important
While the listed ailments may be common in this breed, not all members of the breed suffer from these conditions. Responsible breeders screen for orthopedic and genetic diseases.
At Home
  • Does best indoors
  • Needs sufficient scratching device
  • Declawing is not recommended
  • Kittens are available after 12-16 weeks
  • Low maintenance
Grooming
  • Brushing should be infrequent if the curly coat is to be maintained
  • Shampoos that do not coat the hair but leave the cat feeling silky and clear are recommended to allow the hairs to curl
  • Trim nails regularly
Other Facts
  • A mature male or spayed female will have the best coat
  • Because the curly gene is dominant, curly kittens can be born in the same litter with straight-haired kittens
Breed History
  • Originated from a housecat, Miss DePesto of Noface, found in a shelter in Montana
  • Miss DePesto was bred with a black Persian and produced three curly kittens out of six
