Physical Characteristics
  • Large, semi-longhaired cats, plush and silky coat
  • Body is lighter in color than the face, legs, tail and ears
  • Comes in many colors and patterns
  • Blue eyes
  • Weight: Males are 15-20 pounds; females are 10-15 pounds
  • Slow to mature, reaches full coat color at two years and full size and weight in four years
Temperament
  • Very affectionate, gentle, well behaved
  • Can be taught to come when called and play fetch
  • Will play without extending their claws
  • Not prone to high jumping and climbing
Medical Conditions
  • Needs boosters by 12 weeks old
  • Annual vet visit for checkups is important
While the listed ailments may be common in this breed, not all members of the breed suffer from these conditions. Responsible breeders screen for orthopedic and genetic diseases.
At Home
  • Does best indoors
  • Needs sufficient scratching device
  • Declawing is not recommended
  • Kittens are available after 12-16 weeks
Grooming
  • Average seasonal shedder
  • Use steel comb on a regular basis to remove loose hair and tangles
  • Trim nails regularly
Breed History
  • Developed in the 1960s by Anne Baker, a breeder in Riverside, California
  • Josephine, a white domestic longhair stray with a unique temperament, was bred by Baker with other strays
  • By selecting the offspring that had the look and endearing qualities she wanted, Baker created the Ragdoll breed
