Physical Characteristics
  • Two varieties: longhair and shorthair
  • Coats are parted neatly down the back
  • Tails are large and feather-like
  • Tail is unique not only to this breed, but to each individual cat; like fingerprints, no two tails are ever alike
Temperament
  • Active, smart, talkative
  • Good with dogs and other pets
  • Especially good with children
  • Needs human companionship
  • Likes carrying things in its mouth and usually enjoys a good game of fetch
  • Loves to ride on people's shoulders
  • Good travelers

  • Healthy breed
  • Low kitten mortality rate
  • High disease resistance
  • Annual vet visit for checkups is important

Other Facts
  • A large 15th-century painting hangs in the Smithsonian Institute featuring two longhaired Japanese Bobtails
  • Usually has litters of three or four kittens, which are extremely large for newborns
  • Kittens are active earlier, walk earlier and start getting into trouble earlier than other breeds
Breed History
  • Has existed in Japan for many centuries
  • In 1968, the first three Japanese Bobtails were imported to the United States from Japan
