Breed History
  • Probably originated in Burma
  • Considered sacred companion cat of the Kittah priests
  • A legend about the Birman cat and its priest describes how it developed its colors
  • The modern breed developed from two Birman cats shipped from Burma to France around 1919
  • World War II almost eradicated the breed, but breeders protected them by crossing with other breeds
  • Recognized by the Cat Fanciers' Association in 1967
