Other Facts
- Abyssinia is now known as Ethiopia
- An intact Abyssinian taxidermal exhibit from the early 1800s resides in a Holland museum
Breed History
- No clear origin or history
- One of the oldest breeds
- May have been brought to England by troops leaving Abyssinia after the Egyptian-Abyssinian War
- Also may have been bred from English tabbies and “bunny” ticked cats
- Another theory is that they originated in Southeast Asia
- First mentioned in an 1872 issue of Harper’s Weekly for winning 3rd place in the Crystal Palace show
- Next mentioned in an 1874 cat show book, Cats: Their Points and Characteristics
- First brought to North America in the early 1900s
