Mars Petcare US has announced a voluntary recall of three varieties of Pedigree weight management canned dog food after chunks of plastic were found in the products.
Mars admitted that the certain cans may contain small pieces of blue plastic, which broke off a conveyor belt during the production process. Consumers who have purchased these products are advised to immediately discard or return the food because of the risk of choking or potential digestive problems.
Dr. Neil Shaw, chief medical officer of BluePearl Veterinary Partners warned, “Besides the risk of choking, if swallowed, the foreign body could become lodged in the dog’s digestive track and have to be removed surgically.
