Q:  Can dogs get sleep apnea?  My dog snores really loudly; it almost sounds like she's choking.

A:  I have never seen a discussion of sleep apnea in dogs or cats in the veterinary literature.  Having said that, some dogs, especially brachycephalic breeds such as Pugs and Boston Terriers, typically snore a lot when they sleep.  I suggest having your vet check your dog over because some dogs have physical problems such as an elongated soft palate that may need surgical correction to allow them to breathe better and reduce their snoring.
