Veterinary Technician vs. Veterinary Assistant

A veterinary technician:

  • must be certified by the American Veterinary Medical Association
  • has graduated from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology training program
  • must be licensed

A veterinary assistant:

  • doesn't require formal education
  • doesn't need to pass a credentialing exam
  • is usually trained on the job
  • assists the veterinarian and/or veterinary technician in daily tasks, such as feeding animals and cleaning cages
