Physical Description
- Large, long build
- Silky hair
- Color is usually light with gold overtones
- Points of face, legs and tail are darker
- Round, blue eyes
- White feet
Temperament
- Gentle, active, playful, quiet

- Does best indoors
- Needs sufficient scratching device
- Declawing is not recommended
- Kittens are available after 12-16 weeks
Brief History
- Probably originated in Burma
- Considered sacred companion cat of the Kittah priests
- A legend about the Birman cat and its priest describes how it developed its colors
- The modern breed developed from two Birman cats shipped from Burma to France around 1919
- World War II almost eradicated the breed, but breeders protected them by crossing with other breeds
- Recognized by the Cat Fanciers' Association in 1967

- Trim nails regularly
Medical Conditions
- Needs boosters by 12 weeks old
- Annual vet visit for checkups is important
