The Weimaraner is a large sporting breed that is athletic and powerful. They are active dogs that require regular exercise and training.


Physical Characteristics

  • Fairly large build
  • Coat: Short, fine hair
  • Coloring of mouse-gray to silver-gray
  • Gray nose
  • Eyes are amber, gray or blue-gray
  • Fairly long, hanging ears
  • Height: 23-27 inches
  • Weight: 55-85 pounds
  • Average lifespan: 10-12 years

Temperament

  • Happy, affectionate, smart, independent, willful, brave, loyal
  • Interaction with people: Not recommended for small children or seniors
  • Interaction with animals: Not recommended for small pets
  • Level of attention needed: Needs lots of affection and love
  • Training: Needs firm, experienced training
  • Protection: Good watchdog, but not aggressive

Brief History

  • Originated in Germany
  • Dates back to the early 1800s
  • Ancestor believed to be the Bloodhound
  • Bred for hunting big game
  • Breed brought to the U.S. by Howard Knight, who also founded the breed's club
