The Saluki is a graceful, sight hound breed that requires plenty of exercise. They are very fast and require minimal grooming.


Physical Characteristics

  • Medium build
  • Slim, muscular and elegant
  • Long drop ears
  • Extensive, fine hair on the ears and tail
  • Dark to hazel eyes
  • Thick hair between toes
  • Coat: Feathered, smooth short hair
  • Colors include: White, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle and tan, tricolor (white, black and tan) and black and tan
  • Height: 23-28 inches
  • Weight: 30-65 pounds
  • Average lifespan: 10-12 years

Temperament

  • Intelligent, alert, sensitive, gentle, affectionate, calm, even-tempered
  • Interaction with people: Good with mature children, friendly to strangers
  • Interaction with animals: May be aggressive with non-canine pets
  • Level of attention needed: Needs significant love and companionship
  • Training: Train in a loving manner; can be easily distracted

At Home

  • Not recommended for apartments
  • Needs fenced yard
  • Enjoys warmer climates
  • Can be laid back but needs regular exercise

Brief History

  • Originated in the Middle East
  • Considered a royal dog of Egypt
  • May be the oldest dog breed
  • Depictions of dogs similar to the Saluki found on Egyptian tombs date back to 7000 B.C.
  • Given as gifts rather than being sold
  • Brought to England in 1840
