The Mastiff is a large, protective breed. They require a large living space and regular walks.

Physical Characteristics

• Muscular, massive build with heavy bones
• Black mask around the eyes and nose
• Dark eyes
• Long, tapered tail is set moderately high and carried with a slight curl
• Coat: Straight, short, rough topcoat comes in golden fawn, apricot and brindle
• Height: 27.5-30 inches
• Weight: 150-160 pounds
• Average lifespan: 10-12 years

Temperament

• Gentle, patient, loyal, confident, observant, even-tempered, smart, docile
• Interaction with people: Most are excellent with mature children (not recommend for toddlers because of their size). Suspicious of strangers until guest is welcomed by owner
• Interaction with animals: Can be aggressive toward other dogs
• Level of attention needed: Thrives on human companionship
• Training: Responds best to compassionate, patient training. Extra effort should be given to socialize while a puppy.
• Bark: Minimal, but will do so to protect its family
• Protection: Natural guard dog; possessive of family, and property. Generally holds intruders at bay rather than attacking

At Home

• May be too large for a very small apartment
• Needs small yard
• Inclined to be lazy but needs regular exercise; needs daily walks
• Tends to drool, wheeze and snore loudly
• Eats large quantities of food; owner should be financially able to provide for this breed's size and appetite

• Average shedder
• Brush with fine bristle and smooth with a chamois

Brief History

• Thought to have originated in Asia but mostly recognized as native to England
• Described by Caesar as courageous, strong and brave in the invasion of Britain in 55 B.C.
• Documented throughout English history and literature
• Historically used as an arena gladiator in Roman times; competed against humans, bulls, bears, tigers, lions and other dogs
• Also used as watchdog, bodyguard, companion and flock guardian
• By the end of World War II, Mastiffs were almost extinct in England

• The first documentation of the mastiff is in Chinese, from around 1121 B.C.
• Depicted in Egyptian monuments dating back to 3000 B.C.
• Documented in Chaucer’s "Knight’s Tale" as being as large as a steer
• A Mastiff was on the Mayflower to America
• This breed has existed in Great Britain for 2,000 years
