Brief History

  • A fancier named John Hulme mated a whippet with a rat-killing dog to create a breed that could be used for both rat-killing and rabbit coursing
  • Officially recognized in 1860
  • Though it looks like a miniature Doberman, the breeds are not related
  • The toy and standard versions have been registered as the same breed since 1959
  • Toy variety became popular during Victorian Era, when miniaturization was the rage

Fido's Facts

  • The Manchester terrier's nickname is the "Rat Terrier"
  • Once called the "English gentleman’s terrier"
  • Legend has it that one Manchester terrier named Billy killed 100 rats in 6 minutes, 13 seconds, in a British contest
  • The two main differences between the toy and standard are physical size and ear shape

Medical Conditions

  • Acquired cardiac diseases (including cardiomyopathy)
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease
  • Skin disorders (including coetaneous asthenia)
  • von Willebrand's Disease (blood disorder)

While the listed ailments may be common in this breed, not all members of the breed suffer from these conditions. Responsible breeders screen for orthopedic and genetic diseases.
