The English Springer Spaniel is a medium sized sporting breed.
They are known for their sweet temperament and endurance in the field.


Physical Characteristics

  • Long pendant ears
  • Hazel or brown eyes, depending on coat color
  • Coat: Medium-length hair is flat or slightly wavy; most common colors are liver (brown) and white or black and white, sometimes with tan markings
  • Height: 19-20 inches
  • Weight: 40-50 pounds
  • Average lifespan: 12-14 years

Temperament

  • Even-tempered, gentle, friendly, sociable, smart, skillful, willing, obedient
  • Interaction with people: Good with children
  • Interaction with animals: May be aggressive with same-sex dogs. Good with other pets, except birds
  • Level of attention needed: Does best when with people as much as possible
  • Training: Quick learner; easily trained

At Home

  • OK for apartments if sufficiently exercised
  • Needs average-sized yard
  • Adaptable to different environments

Grooming

  • Average, continuous shedder
  • Needs regular brushing
  • Longer coats will mat if not brushed often
  • Shave hair on underside of the ears to avoid chronic ear infection
  • Trim hair on feet

Brief History

  • Founder of all English hunting spaniels
  • Became popular in 1700s
  • Name comes from method of flushing game - springs forward to drive birds out of hiding
