The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a brave and protective breed that originates from Turkey. This large breed requires plenty of exercise.

  • Coat: Short, dense hair with thick undercoat
  • Almond-shaped, brown eyes
  • Solid black or brown nose
  • Black mask
  • Height: 28-32 inches
  • Weight: 85-145 pounds
  • Average lifespan: 12-15 years

Temperament

  • Alert, smart, calm, loyal, protective, territorial, stubborn
  • Interaction with people: Good with children, but should be supervised due to its strength
  • Interaction with animals: Can be dominant toward other dogs; needs early socializing to prevent this
  • Protection: Good guard dog; protective of family and territory

At Home

  • Not recommended for apartments
  • Needs large yard
  • Needs long daily walks

Grooming

  • Sheds heavily twice a year
  • Needs thorough brushing during shedding season
  • Requires little to no grooming except when shedding

  • Native to Turkey
