The American Staffordshire Terrier is a powerful and loving breed that is devoted to his family. His short coat requires minimal grooming.


Physical Characteristics

  • Large, muscular build
  • Dark, round eyes
  • Black nose
  • Stocky with deep, broad chest
  • Coat: Short, stiff, glossy hair
  • Height: 17-19 inches
  • Weight: 40-75 pounds
  • Average lifespan: 9-15 years

Temperament

  • Happy, outgoing, confident, brave, smart, very obedient
  • Interaction with people: Good family dog; excellent with children
  • Interaction with animals: May be aggressive toward other dogs
  • Training: Needs to be socialized with dogs and people as a puppy
  • Protection: Good guard dog; extremely protective of owners

At Home

  • OK for apartments if sufficiently exercised
  • Needs a secure yard
  • Prefers warm climates

Brief History

  • Originated in England from cross of bulldog and terrier
  • Arrived in the U.S. in the late 1800s
  • Originally called the bull-and-terrier dog, half and half, pit dog or pit bullterrier
  • The American Kennel Club officially recognized the breed in 1936

  • In World War I, one American Staffordshire terrier earned the rank of sergeant and became the war's most-decorated animal
  • Posters of the breed were used during World War II as a symbol of courage and determination
