The Affenpinscher is an active, small breed that is fearless.
This native of Germany has a harsh coat that requires moderate grooming.


Physical Characteristics

  • Small to medium build
  • Terrier-like
  • Monkey-like expression
  • Black nose and lips
  • Rough, dense coat
  • Coat: Usually black, but also may be silver, gray, tan or red
  • Height: 9-11.5 inches
  • Weight: 7-9 pounds
  • Average lifespan: 14-15 years

Temperament

  • Loyal, affectionate, quiet, fearless, friendly
  • Interaction with people: Not recommended for young children; may become overly excited if threatened
  • Training: Can be difficult to train
  • Protection: Tends to guard food and toys

At Home

  • OK for apartments
  • Sensitive to extreme climates
  • Enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking and camping

Grooming

  • Sheds little to no hair
  • Coat shouldn't be cut short
  • Needs weekly brushing
  • Plucking may be necessary
  • Trim hair from corners of eyes

Brief History

  • Originated in Germany
  • One of the world's oldest toy dogs
  • Controlled pests on farms and in stores during the 17th century

  • The French call this breed the diablotin moustachu, or “moustached little devil”
